My personal goal for this program is
stepping out of my comfort zone and exploring as much as I can to further my
knowledge in technology. Combining this to my goal for this assignment, the ability
to spread information/knowledge/resources to students, staff, parents and
schools, technology proves to be the best form of execution. The more I
researched creating a website or symbaloo, I kept coming back to the idea of
symbaloo being the better tool as it hold the ability to incorporate many
different applications within one link.

My symbaloo will be created with the mindset of a teacher librarian sharing links with her community. I thought of my own library and what I would like to incorporate in this resource. I am focusing on the transition from library to learning commons therefore I wanted to make sure I incorporated all aspects of the teacher librarian’s role. I therefore began some research within my own school district.
Library Learning Commons:
- Support the development of the BC
curriculum core competencies and acquisition of learning standards through
access to, and instruction in, the effective use of print and digital learning resources.
- Foster all literacies, including digital, media,
information and global literacies to empower learners in the acquisition
and development of the Central Okanagan School District Attributes of a
Learner.
- Foster student learning through collaborative planning,
teaching and assessing.
- Allow for flexible scheduling that is responsive to the
needs of all learners.
- Provide an inclusive, flexible,
learner-centered, physical and virtual space for collaboration, inquiry, innovation and play to expand
and deepen learning.
- Support the use of technology for learning to enable
creation, collaboration and communication.
My final artifact will be a symbaloo page
with the target audience being students. From here staff and parents will be
able to check out different links as a way to help them with their
students/children. I originally wanted
to have a page dedicated to students, teachers, and parents, however upon
starting to build my symabloo page I realized I had so many areas I could go
for students I wanted to focus on them. I also thought the page I create for students would benefit staff as they could
use the symbaloo for their own classroom.
As for the different categories I want to have links focusing on literacy for all students. These links help students who struggle with behavior, E.L.L, learning disabilities, dyslexia, reading challenges, and visual impairments. They can also be used to bring another form of multimodal distribution into the classroom. I also want to create a virtual space for students to explore reference resources. These resources will prove to be a good place to begin research as they provide a general background on certain topics for assignment. This also provides a flexible environment as students have 24-hour access to them. Differentiated learning is another aspect I want to focus on. I want to provide resources for students to showcase their learning. Different formats for different learners! I also want to incorporate different coding websites as a way to promote computational thinking with the school. This also helps create a virtual space for makerspace.
This
is my starting point for my project! As I have begun the process of building my
symabloo I have acquired a few questions regarding my end assignment and goal.
- How many different categories
should I create?
- Should I incorporate
applications that schools will have to pay for?
- Should I include subjects
- How should I label the links?
Will the name of the website or application be enough?

I feel it is important to
provide a rundown of each category with staff and students so they understand
the different links and resources that are provided.
§ This could be done per individual class within the library (students
and teachers learning at the same time)
§ This could also be done with just teachers, primary level teachers
(k-2) or intermediate teachers (3-5) or per partner teachers. I could host
lunch hour snack and learns going over different resources for students!
Overall I am excited with this assignment as it is so open to endless possibilities. I feel I will be adding to my symabloo daily and I research different applications and websites.

ReplyDeleteHi Kaitlin - Symbaloo is a great choice for digital curation and I love that you have thought about how to explicitly share and explain the webmixes with staff and students by walking them through the categories and resources. Such a great idea and I am inspired to do this with the staff and students at my school too. I look forward to seeing your final webmixes and making use of them :)
ReplyDeleteI love your project because I'm still unsure how it works after watching the video. I love the graphics though and I am really excited to see your project since I am such a visual learner. Once I see how you have placed things and how it is going to work for you I think this is something I too am going to want to explore.
ReplyDeleteWell done checkin post about your progress and who you are building your final vision for. A good overview of your goals and features that the symbaloo platform provides. A good discussion of potential challenges and some interesting questions. For organizing your symbaloo, I would have multiple tabs based on classes/topics and for each tool or link, I would have the title and a brief description of what it is. (*for example, Wordpress-Blogging, or Youtube - Video) Looking forward to the final vision!
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying Symbaloo as well. I like how it is sort of like a Pintrest page! I had some similar challenges - how to organize, how many tabs, what subjects/weblinks to include...there is so much available, I want to choose the best and have it be the most accessible to students and teachers. I'm curious to see how you organize your Symbaloo charts and I can't wait to see your cool webmixes! This sounds like a really helpful project for your students!
